Baby Boomers are the generation born between 1946 and 1964 and Millennials are the generation born between 1980 and 2000. These generations are very, very different, especially where it comes to stuff they own. The Baby Boomers surround themselves with collections of keepsakes, large furniture and their status was set with how big their homes were and how they filled them up. Millennials have collections in a different manner, through life experiences that are collected in the digital domain; photographs are collected through social media rather than photograph albums and framed photos.
Finances are very different too. The Millennials are living in a debt ridden age, leaving university with the amount of debt that would have funded a Baby Boomers first house purchase. Many will never own their own home and are living in smaller rented spaces and have a far more nomadic life than the Baby Boomers.
The generational gap, and life as we know it changing for all concerned. The Baby Boomers were used to handing down the large dinner service and key items of furniture to their children. There isn’t much room in a studio apartment for an 8 person dining table with sideboard, and the likelihood of being able to buy a house to fit it in are dwindling at an ever decreasing rate.
Visions of the future are changing, and the Baby Boomers are adapting, they???re becoming accustomed to shrugging off those previously priced possessions when they downsize, releasing capital for a comfortable retirement. Some will cling on to these items, putting those items into self storage on the chance the previously loved furniture will be claimed by their children.
However, Self Storage is becoming a common denominator for both the Baby Boomers and the Millennials, they’re both looking to enrich life with experiences, travelling and freeing up life of the burdens that possessions cost us. However we all need a bed to sleep on, a sofa to sit on and the standard everyday items than make life comfortable. These items are costly to buy, so rather than constantly sell and re-buy they chose to Storage World self store, they buy once of good quality and keep for a lifetime, but relocate into storage when the travel bug hits or a new job overseas calls.
The size of our stuff is getting smaller, but the desire to travel and enrich life is growing at an ever growing rate. A three bedroom family home with the average amount of furniture and possessions can fit in a 100sqft room and a typical studio apartment can fit in a 25sqft unit.
Self Storage with Storage World is giving people the choice to live their life, travel, collect items for the future and create the home of tomorrow. No matter what generation we are a part of, the need to have a home, no matter how big or small it is, home still is an important part of life.
