The past few months have seen a huge surge in the sales of hot tubs across the UK, with many opting to splurge the cash they’ve managed to save from cancelled holidays and fewer shopping trips on a spa for the back garden.

Enjoying a hot tub through the summer months is great, but once the chill starts to creep in, earlier rather than later in the British climate, your hot tub will require some extra care and attention. Storing your hot tub properly over winter is very important to ensure it doesn’t suffer irreparable damage caused by forceful winds, ice, snow and rain.

Whether you opted for an inflatable hot tub like a Lay-Z-Spa, or you have a standard electric hot tub or more traditional wood-fired hot tub, they each require similar care in the winter months to ensure you can get it back out in top condition when the weather starts to warm.

How to store a hot tub

Step one: Firstly, you will need to remove the filter pump (not applicable if using a wood-fired tub). Once this has been done, insert some stopper plugs and disconnect any hoses from the filter pump itself.

Step two: Next, you’ll need to drain your hot tub fully. Leaving water inside of your hot tub over winter, particularly if you’re planning to keep it outdoors, can cause freezing which can cause irreversible damage to your tub.

Step three: Then you’ll want to give it a good clean up before you put it into storage. To do this, all you’ll need to do is use some warm soapy water and a clean cloth – don’t fill the hot tub, just use the damp cloth and smooth it over the tub.

Step four: Once you’ve drained and cleaned your hot tub, it will be ready to store. Your hot tub will be best stored in its original box, however if you did not keep this, some quality tarpaulin will suffice. Then you’ll need to decide where you’re going to store your tub. As it’s a large item, most people will opt for a shed or a garage.

During the winter months however, these areas can become damp and you run the risk of your hot tub being exposed to mold, mildew and damp. To prevent this, you can use an aid to absorb any extra moisture, such a talcum powder, although this is of course a short term solution and will need to be repeated regularly. Be sure to store your hot tub on its side as this makes it easier to manoeuvre, but not the side with the pumps to avoid damage.

Self Storage for hot tubs

Ideally, you will store your hot tub in a fit-for-purpose self storage unit. This is because the temperature is kept to the right levels to ensure no harmful environmental factors can damage your hot tub, such as the aforementioned mold and damp, or any adverse weather conditions.

Because a self storage unit is housed internally, you get the extra protection of the outer building as well as the unit itself. This makes it much safer to store your hot tub if you have not retained the original packaging and means it will be in perfect working order when it comes to using it again.

Not only will your hot tub be kept in the perfect environment, but we all know that a hot tub can occasionally be enjoyed even during the winter months. What better way to spend a frosty evening than in a steamy spa under the starry night sky? That’s why when you store at Storage World, you will enjoy the great flexibility and access we provide.
