As all business owners know, there’s no guaranteed path to success. But there are some key factors that can boost your sustainability and your success.
1. Know everything you need to know!
Whether it’s last year’s turnover, current stock levels or market trends, if you’re not on the ball you’ll miss opportunities and fall at hurdles. Visibility over all the different parts of your business and the arena you’re in, as well as your staff and customers, will allow you to adapt as needed. This doesn’t mean you need to know every little thing in detail, but you should at least know the key trends and where to go for more information.
Whatever information you have at your fingertips, you need to parcel it into different categories – what do you need to act on now; what is useful background; what can you come back to later? So long as you prioritise according to your business and market, you can focus with confidence.
3. Invest in people
Your staff are your most important asset, not only because they get things done but also because they act as ambassadors. Happy staff who know they are valued will not only be more productive but will also speak highly of your firm in their everyday lives – to people you otherwise might not reach through marketing.
4. Take action
Don’t be afraid to act. Think big; do something differently; let your staff be in charge for a change. Inventing, experimenting and challenging the norms doesn’t always work – but you don’t know until you try!
5. Don’t forget to switch off
Having a personal life that you enjoy is as vital as any amount of business acumen. If you can’t de-stress you’ll soon burn out. Allow yourself to take a walk, hit the gym or sit quietly with a book. You might even find that a new idea pops up while you’re not even thinking about your business!
