Storage units are ideal if you are moving home, downsizing, renovating and simply need some extra space.

The convenience, affordability and flexibility of self storage make it the perfect extension of your home or office space.

Sometimes it’s just some paperwork or a few small boxes, and other times it’s an entire home or the assets of a business. This is why most self storage providers offer a selection of different size units to meet a variety of needs, as do we. To make the most of the space in your unit, it’s important to pack things effectively so that you can easily access your items and save space in your unit.

Develop an organised inventory

Trying to find a specific box in a unit full of items can be overwhelming. Developing an organised inventory is one of the most effective ways to pack your belongings so that they are easy to find.

Pack grouped items together and mark the box with a number. Keep a list of each numbered box and the contents inside. An inventory will help you find your belongings easily when you next need them. Another top tip is to use quality packaging supplies to protect your belongings.

Place the heaviest, bulkiest boxes at the bottom

Stack your boxes strategically, placing the heaviest at the bottom and the lightest at the top. Packing boxes from heaviest to lightest ensures that fragile items are protected. It’s also a good idea to pack vertically and add shelving to make the most of the space available.

Pack regularly-used items near the front

Prioritise the entrance of your storage unit and pack items that you regularly need near the front. Rather than scramble to find a specific item, it becomes easily accessible.

Following the same thought process, you can pack items that are seldom used at the back of the unit. Make sure that you leave an aisle or walkway that allows access to all boxes.

Disassemble furniture

Furniture can take up a lot of unnecessary space. Before moving furniture into the storage unit, take the time to disassemble the various parts to save space. You can also store smaller items within drawers or inside cupboards.
