With the arrival of spring, many people have added spring cleaning to the top of their to-do list – but what about the garden shed?
Decluttering the shed offers many benefits such as freeing up space for storage, making it easier to find items when you need them, and creating an organised workplace.
Depending on when you last decided to dust the cobwebs and organise your tools, the thought of decluttering your shed can be overwhelming. To help make the process efficient and stress-free, we’ve put together a few key tips for decluttering the shed!
Create an inventory
The first step to decluttering your shed is to pull out all of your tools and belongings in a central place, such as the lawn. Once everything is visible, you can create an inventory of what you’ve been storing in your shed.
Based on this inventory, create four separate categories;
- Keep in the shed
- Sell or donate
- Store in an off-site space
- Throw out
Give the shed a deep clean
Once all of the belongings are on the lawn, it’s time to put on your rubber gloves and give the shed a deep clean. Dust all surfaces, clean the floor and windows and remove any pests or rubbish.
Group your belongings
Collect all similar belongings together so that they are easier to find when you next need them. For example, store all gardening equipment in the same corner of the shed, keeping the hosepipe, the rake and pruning shears together.
Put belongings in a designated space
Make sure that each item has a specific place in the shed. If you need to add a little bit of extra storage space, then you can do that too. Add a few shelves to store jars of screws, and put some hooks on the wall to keep larger items safe. It’s important to return these items after each use.
Create a cleaning timetable
Just as you have a schedule to change the linen on your bed or sweep the floor of your home, it’s worth having a cleaning timetable for the shed. Whether you set aside time once a month, or once every three months, it makes a big difference to do regular light cleans of your shed. During this time, you can remove obvious unused items, check for any pests and dust the space.
